High Level View of the Approval Process


Design & Build The
Identity Service

  • Prepare an identity service offering to be Kantara Approved, which:
    • Includes policy, practice and technologies 
    • Might be in development, implementation or full operation 
    • May or may not initially conform to the Kantara IAF requirements, specifically the Service Assessment Criteria (IAF 1410 and IAF 1420).

Contact Kantara &

  • Contact the Kantara Secretariat to inform that a service is being prepared to seek approval
  • Register as a Kantara Member: Subscriber Option and pay fees
Finalize Identity Service
  • Complete the implementation of the Identity Service in a way that meets the requirements of the Kantara IAF
Apply for Approval
  • Submit the 3 forms which make up the application:
    • A completed Application for Kantara Approval, which contains:
      • Applicant contact and billing information
      • High level details about the identity service offering
      • Which Approval is being sought (CSP, Component, Assurance Level, FICAM, etc)
      • Acceptance of the Kantara Trademark License Agreement terms
    • A Draft Outline Specification of a Service Subject to Assessment (S3A)
      • The S3A forms the basis of the Approval evaluation process and the scope of Assessment by the Kantara Accredited Assessor
      • The S3A grows in detail and completeness as the process proceeds - at the application phase, many sections will be blank
    • A completed and signed Kantara Initiative Identity Assurance Framework Trademark License Agreement
Be Assessed &
Address Findings 
  • When the Identity Service is ready for Assessment, select and engage a Kantara Accredited Assessor
    • Applicant completes a Detailed S3A to define the assessment scope
    • Accredited Assessor conducts assessment relative to appropriate Service Assessment Criteria
    • Accredited Assessor produces a Kantara Assessment Report
  • Work with the Assessor to address non-conforming service areas
Submit Approval Package
  • Update the Application originally submitted
  • Assemble supporting documents such as the Kantara Assessors Report and Evidence
  • Contact the Kantara Secretariat to arrange for file transfer
Kantara Evaluation &
  • Assurance Review Board (ARB) evaluates material, seeking clarification if needed
  • ARB makes a recommendation to the Kantara Board of Directors to Approve License Grant, Approve License Grant with Conditions or Deny License Grant
  • Kantara Board of Directors makes a decision based on the ARB recommendation
  • Letter containing decision prepared and provided to Applicant
Grant of LicenseIf Approved, the Applicant enters the process to formalize the Grant of License to use the Kantara Initiative Identity Assurance Framework Trademark.
