Kevin Cox is a participant in the Kantara Initiative’s User-Managed Access (UMA) Work Group. His interest in User-Managed Access stems from a long experience in user interface design and the construction of information systems with a user focus.

Kevin blogs at http://cscoxk.wordpress.com. The blog is subtitled “the implications of giving users control over their online information”. In 2004 Kevin founded Edentiti a company whose objective is to give users control over electronic information about themselves. The first Edentiti product greenID gives an individual tools to verify their own electronic identities. With this product the individual becomes their own Identity Provider. The tools for a person being their own Identity Provider are the same as the tools used by third party Identity Providers. However, the resulting system is less expensive to operate while protecting privacy and increasing trust.

In UMA terminology Edentiti is currently designing and developing tools to allow an individual to be their own Authorisation Manager (AM). It is believed that the same advantages of a person being their own Identity Provider will hold when a person becomes their own Authorising Manager. The underlying software and user interface components will be the same or similar but the emergent properties of increased trust, privacy protection and lower cost will emerge because the person is their own AM.

Kevin wrote his first program in 1962 and ran it on a machine, in a chocolate factory, that was a commercial development of the computer used in code cracking during the second world war. Kevin has been an active participant, in many roles, as computers have changed from helping calculations to systems that expand our intellect and enhance our ability to communicate with others.

We’re very happy to have Kevin’s leadership and knowledge.

Lucy Lynch is the Secretary & Treasurer for Kantara Initiative. Lucy has been involved with Kantara since it’s inception in 2009.

Lucy is Director of Trust and Identity Initiatives with the Internet Society (ISOC) and her role is to examine some of the major issues affecting the Internet and to develop projects that will address those problems. Prior to joining the Internet Society, Lucy worked at the University of Oregon as a member of the Academic Computing and Network Applications Group. Her assignments with the University included work with the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) – a long-time partner with the Internet Society in bringing network technology and education to the developing world.

In addition, she has been an active participant in both the North American Network Operators Group (NANOG) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and recently completed a term as Chair of the IETF Administrative Oversight Committee (IAOC).

Lucy holds a Master’s degree in Mass Communications from the University of Oregon and has a long history of service in non-profit organizations ranging from mental health counseling to a hands-on science museum. She has been a grant writer, project manager, and a computer programmer. She also once managed the Flying Karamazov Brothers (www.fkb.com/) and hopes to put that unique non-linear managerial experience to good use as she directs new efforts for the Internet Society.

Lucy lives in Eugene, Oregon, USA and travels extensively for work. When not traveling Lucy likes reading books and enjoying the outdoors.

We’re very happy to have Lucy leadership and knowledge.

“What is UMA and why do we need it?”

In a nutshell, User-Managed Access (UMA) is…

A web protocol that lets you conveniently control who gets access to all your online stuff, no matter where it lives and no matter whether you’re online at the moment

A Work Group of the Kantara Initiative that is free for anyone to join and contribute to

A set of draft specifications that is free for anyone to implement

UMA is needed by…

Individuals, to give them a “personal data concierge” that handles requests for access to their online data, content, and services

Websites, to enable them to offer sophisticated data-sharing features to their users without having to implement those features natively

Online identity providers, to offer their users the ability to set access policies from a single place even if those users engage with dozens or hundreds of sites and apps on a regular basis

This webinar will…

Discuss real-life use cases for UMA

Demonstrate UMA implementations

Review UMA’s architecture and its relationship to the OAuth and OpenID Connect specifications
